A traditional proposal

Friday night I asked Adelle to marry me, and she said yes!

Parents:
My parents knew I would be asking her in time, it was discussed when I visited them in Winter. Last week I formally asked her Father, John. We had just finished dinner, and Adelle had just left. I called him to the room where Sue was napping in front of the Television. "John, I would like to ask your permission to marry Adelle." "Well, I'm a bit taken aback, it's the first time I've been asked that, well um, yes, ahh... Isn't this where I say that I'll think about it for a few days?" "Respectfully, I'll be proceeding either way." " Very good, as it should be" And then I swore them both to secrecy for a while.

Friday night:
Adelle told me that she had leave on Friday night, so I drove up to Canberra from Wodonga, and we met at Koko Black  which was the site of our first proper date. We had chili hot chocolates each and shared a brownie. I waited for a natural break in the conversation, but one was not forthcoming, so I palmed the ring. I then took the spoon from her hands. In one motion I went to one knee, slipped the ring on her finger and asked "Will you marry me". She said yes.

Ring:
The ring is gold with an Australian dark blue sapphire and two flanking smaller Australian blue sapphires to either side. Between the sapphires are a sprinkling of diamonds. A photo will be forthcoming.

Wedding?:
Yes :)
I would like a full suit style wedding, so it will likely be in a colder part of the year. We do not have a date, or even a city yet. Canberra for Adelle's family? Brisbane for mine and the boys? Wodonga to make everyone else have to travel? Prague just because?

Any more questions and I'll answer them in the comments.

Dong dispatches 3 - "The Yak" and more job hunting

The house is now much closer to full order, only the games room and a quarter of the garage to go.

The weekend saw Adelle and I make our first trip away, down to Yackandandah. We did the usual day tripper things, browsing the shops and enjoying nice scones and coffee. We have been on a very low sugar diet recently, and I have been very good, however I did have jam on my scones.

Today has been more job hunting. I am happy with my resume, I've written a complete selection criteria for a job I really want, and I've chatted to a couple of my referees over the last week as catch up, letting them know they may (should!) be fielding job calls soon.

Getting ready for my third home town

At the end of this Semester, Adelle will be a qualified engineer, and we will be moving to Wodonga, Victoria, as she will be based at the army base there. This weekend I will heading down to "Border War", an SCA war event there. It's going to be interesting, interacting with gang knowing I will be a local in few months.

I'm also facing finding a new job. I don't think this will be too much of an issue, as there are some major hirers down there, and I have very solid experience.

Finding fellow geeks shouldn't be a problem, I have those skills sorted :)

This is also a shout out - who knows cool people near the area, and cool places/ things to do?

Fetching the Van

Well Mr Sui caught the bus at 07.09 this morning on the bus to get to Albury. He will get in around midday, and back by about 16.00. Total cost at the mechanics $147. I covered that cash. The van will be into the mechanics for more once it is empty, and I imagine that it won't be cheap.

Wheels fell off...

Sui and I went down to Melbourne on a combination adventure. He needed
to move a van load of his possessions from Canberra to Melbourne, and
I wanted to do the SCA invest - devest. We took my Ruddbuck$ van down
due to it's carry capacity. I have a sweet little Toyota Yaris for day
to day driving, and the Toyota Hiace Van for when I need the cubes.

We had just got the van, and Sui's price was paying for the NRMA (car
accident service) $50 and the fuel.

We got down okay, seven hours to the outskirt, $150 in fuel, to the
plan. I enjoyed the event and the socialising and the good food. I
especially enjoyed the treat of getting a free trencher from the
cabaple hands (/lathe) of Waldo. Thanks to both Vandal and Wystan for
putting me up for Friday and Saturday night. Sui got all of his stuff
loaded in the Van on Saturday and made it to the event after all that.

Sui and I left 9am Sunday morning and were making good time. 20 km out
of Albury we get a vibration, and both start peering at the road,
wondering about the surface. Then there is an almighty bang and we
both say "It's not the surface." Traction and drive-ability remain
good. I point to a good spot on the side, and Sui says "With that
already" and we roll to the verge. And the wheel went rolling by...
for about 200 metres, missing all incoming traffic and ending in a
field across the road.

We hop out, clearing the brake drum from the road, and then walking
across the traffic and fetching the tyre. It was in excellent state
other than not being attached to the car :) We then called the NRMA
and a tow truck to put it into a workshop. While waiting we called our
peeps. Then Sui had the brainwave - hey, we would be first, any chance
of a rescue? Luckily there were two chances at least, and it turned
out that Stephen and Matilde were able to clear enough space for the
two of us, and we got home to Canberra okay. Sui is on Uni holidays at
the moment - so next phase will be Sui to get a bus or lift down once
it is fixed.

I rarely include photos in my blog, but this deserved two :)

Notice five bolts are missing...
